Meet Dr. Susan J. Harkema, PhD

2020 Meet The Scientists Event

The California Spinal Cord Injury “Meet the Scientists” forum brings together scientists, researchers, clinicians, associates and students to give individuals an opportunity to meet, ask questions, and hear about the latest advances in spinal cord injury research.

Dr. Susan J. Harkema, PhD, Professor holds the Owsley B. Frazier Rehabilitation Chair in Neurological Surgery and is the Associate Director of the Kentucky Spinal Cord Injury Research Center at the University of Louisville. She is the Director of Research at Frazier Rehab Institute and is Director of the NeuroRecovery Network that provides standardized activity-based therapies for individuals with spinal cord injury at seven national rehabilitation centers in the United States. Her research focuses on neural plasticity of spinal networks and recovery of function after spinal cord injury.

Relentless Film Screening and Lecture

Join us for the Relentless Film Screening and Lecture on Monday, March 2, 2020. Presented by UCI School of Biological Sciences, and Co-Hosted by Reeve-Irvine Research Center at University of California, Irvine. This event is free and open to the general public. Students, faculty, university staff, medical providers, caregivers from Orange County and beyond, all are welcome. Speaker meet and greet immediately following. Refreshments provided.

About Relentless: The comeback story of a young action sports athlete who seemingly lost everything after a freak accident turned him quadriplegic. Through his relentless pursuit of self-improvement, Marty O’Connor learns to embrace his challenges and forge a new sense of self. Relentless is a documentary short about a remarkable young man’s journey.

Marty brings a rare energy to all of his endeavors, and will share his unique perspective at this interactive evening event. In addition, Drs. Oswald Steward, Aileen Anderson and Brian Cummings will talk about research focused on the study of repair, regeneration, and recovery of function after spinal cord injury.
